HOW TO TREAT THROAT TICKLE

HOW TO TREAT THROAT TICKLE

Got a tickle in your throat? Must be uncomfortable huh!

That constantly nagging particle or a sensation with no particle at all, bothering you all the time when you speak or even when sitting idle.

WHAT IS ACTUALLY A THROAT TICKLE?

A feeling of uncomfortable irritation in the mucus membrane of the throat, trachea or esophagus is termed as throat tickle.

Roughly 1% of the population reports a tickling or trickling sensation in the back of the throat which continues regardless of repeated endeavors to clear it.

The sensation is most of the time joined by dry cough. This condition is a result of the inflammation in the upper respiratory region.

WHAT CAUSES THROAT TICKLE?

Well there is a long list and many factors are included in this condition. I am going to list some of them here:

  • Exposure of pollutants, dry air, cold, chemicals, cigarette smoke (either of first hand or second hand).
  • Allergies from dust or pollens
  • Viral infections – In viral infections, it occur as a hint of the infection.
  • Post nasal drip
  • Shouting
  • Chronic cough
  • Asthma
  • Dehydration
  • Acid reflux syndromes (causes inflammation in the back of the throat)
  • Side effects of certain medications

There might be some symptoms along with throat tickle:

  • Runny nose
  • Hoarseness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Fever or chills
  • Heartburn
  • Facial pain

To treat throat tickle, we need to understand it completely and know how it happens.

So at the base of the epiglottis, there are these little crevices that have nerve endings down there. When these nerve endings are touched or stimulated they give rise to throat tickle.

TREATMENT OF THROAT TICKLE

To ease throat tickle, it entirely depends on the cause. Since there are many causes that I have listed above, every cause needs a different treatment.

So, treat the primary cause of your throat tickle to get rid of it completely.

So the first thing you can always do if you face the recurrence of throat tickle is to prevent it. Again, it depends on what is the stimulus for you.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT THROAT TICKLE?

  1. Hydration – Keep drinking frequent sips of fluid. It is recommended you drink 64 ounces of fluid a day. No caffeine. Just plain water. Especially who sit and work at desk all day; forget about drinking water.
  2. Warm up your voice – Remember the voice is made of muscles and you need to take care of it. It needs rest, it needs nutrition, and it needs a warm up. Don’t pull these muscles and make them healthy.
  3. Just breathe – Breathe, articulate, and reach out with your voice.
  4. Sit and work around clean environment with no pollutants or irritants. Especially if you are allergic to something. Try to keep everything clean around you.
  5. Eat healthy
Other points you need to keep in mind are:
  • Avoid clearing throat, it makes throat tickle worse by amplifying the complaint and adds swelling.
  • If you are having cough along with it, you can use cough suppressant like dextromethorphan that is an over the counter medication.
  • If your throat tickle comes from the allergies, you can use antihistamine like levocetirizine.
  • Gargle with salt water
